Aim
The study aims to highlight the prevalence rate of online sexual coercion and extortion by
documenting published incidents in the Egyptian media during the last four years, from
January 2019 to December 2022.
Methodology
The study documented incidents of online sexual coercion and extortion in Egypt, which was
published online during the period from January 2019 to December 2022. The study relied on
the Google search engine and used a set of keywords such as “ ﺗﻬﺪﻳﺪ/ اﺑﺘﺰاز إﻟﻜﺘﺮوﻧﻲ/ ﻳﺒﺘﺰ/اﺑﺘﺰاز.”
A spreadsheet was designed to contain all recorded OSCE incidents during the indicated four
consecutive years. The spreadsheet was divided into different columns, each containing
pertinent variables related to the incident, such as the timing of its occurrence, the detailed
location, the nature of the location, the purpose of extortion, and the means used, among
other variables. The identified and selected news followed a set of criteria, including:
News that was published in one of the well-known official newspapers in (Al-Youm Al-Sabea,
Cairo 24, Sada Al-Balad, Al-Ahram News Gate, Al-Masry Al-Youm, Al-Watan, and Veto)
The incidents of OSCE occurred inside Egypt, and the victims/survivors were Egyptians.
Excluding any published incident that does not include the date of occurrence.
Challenges
Several challenges were encountered while conducting the study:
1.Most of the published news did not include detailed information about the victims/survivors or
perpetrators, such as age, educational level, work status, marital status, and other important social
